Hundreds of programs that embody the principles of the Green New Deal – providing climate protection, addressing racial and economic inequities, while also providing a just transition for workers and communities – are gaining traction in local communities, cities, states, and tribal lands across the country. These activities are what acclaimed author and activist Jeremy Brecher describes as a “Green New Deal from Below” in his new book:
The Green New Deal from Below
How Ordinary People Are Building a Just and Climate-Safe Economy
The Labor Network for Sustainability is taking the opportunity to launch the book, as well as the organizing models it provides, in a live webinar event scheduled for
Wednesday, November 20th at 7:30 pm ET
The purpose of the Green New Deal from Below is to inspire hope and action in towns, cities, and states at grassroots and institutional levels. It will provide real-world models to emulate and improve upon. It will build the foundation, constituency, and knowledge for a more effective national Green New Deal and the mobilization required to win it. The programs and activities it supports will reduce fossil fuel extraction and burning; create alternative energies and efficiencies; create good union jobs; and counter interrelated injustices that are embedded in our present political economy. It’s safe to say that whatever happens in the November elections, organizing the Green New Deal at a local and state level will be a crucial part of building constituencies and providing proofs of concept for drawing together diverse and resilient constituencies across silos around a program for climate, jobs, and justice.
