This is a time to mark your calendars, because labor-climate events are coming up thick and fast! February 4 is Transit Equity Day, with more than 20 events around the country calling for affordable public transportation as a human right.
Then, following up on the historic Climate Strikes in September, youth activists are calling for trade unionists and other adults to join an even more overwhelming action the week of Earth Day, April 22. Meanwhile, unions around the country are weighing in on climate protection. Members of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) who work for the Environmental Protection Agency are mounting a fight for the right to scientific integrity in their work and the right to enforce environmental laws without political interference. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has published a special issue of the American Educator to support teachers in educating their students about climate change. The Texas AFL-CIO unanimously passed a resolution calling for a climate protection policy. And with support of the Connecticut Roundtable on Climate and Jobs—which boasts 19 unions and labor councils as affiliates—Connecticut has passed legislation that requires companies to seek Project Labor Agreements for offshore wind projects.
