The Labor Network for Sustainability (LNS) is a dynamic organization looking for a full time Communications Director who is invested in building a powerful labor climate movement to secure an ecologically sustainable and economically just future where everyone can make a living on a living planet. The ideal candidate has experience developing the communication strategy and establishing new communication practices for a national non-profit; experience using communications strategies to advance climate and economic justice; the proven ability to communicate effectively to different audiences across the labor climate movement.
About our Communications Priorities
The Labor Network for Sustainability works with labor unions, rank and file members, climate and environmental justice organizations, and other allies to fight for urgent climate action and a just transition. Our work covers a broad range of issues including, just transition, fossil fuel phase out, climate resilience, and just recovery within a broad range of sectors including power, industry, transportation, buildings, and agriculture. The labor climate landscape is rapidly changing and LNS must develop an overarching communications strategy that helps provide the information, skills, and support needed by those in our national network.
Areas of Responsibility
Develop, implement, and manage LNS’s strategic communication planning to support LNS’s broader mission and goals
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategic plan, including updated branding, to best advance LNS’s mission and goals through a collaborative, organization-wide process
- Identify target audiences and key messaging practices and opportunities to maximize impact of the LNS strategic plan
- Work with LNS program staff to develop program area-specific communication goals and strategies in alignment with the organization-wide communications strategy
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and adjust as necessary
- Support the Development Manager in donor communications, giving appeals, and funding proposals and reports
Develop and oversee content creation for the organization across various platforms in line with LNS’s mission and specific areas of programming
- Oversee the creation, editing, and distribution of compelling content, with consistent tone and branding, across various platforms, including website, social media, newsletter, and press releases
- Manage the organization’s digital presence, including membership emails, website updates and social media engagement
- Collaborate with other LNS staff and departments to support organizational programming, initiatives, and campaigns and ensure alignment and consistency in messaging
- Support the communication needs of LNS’s advocacy and campaign efforts
- Collaborate with the Development Manager to strengthen fundraising communications and coordinate external communications
Expand LNS’s coverage in media and build LNS’s reputation as an expert on labor climate issues and perspectives
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets
- Develop and pitch stories to media to enhance LNS’s visibility and influence
- Respond to media inquiries and coordinate interviews and media appearances for LNS spokespeople on staff and within the LNS network
Experience and Skills
- At least 5 years of experience in a communications role, preferably within non-profit, labor, or environmental organizations
- Proven experience in developing and executing successful communication strategies
- Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
- Strong media relations experience and a track record of securing media coverage
- Proficiency in digital media and social media platforms
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote setting
- Commitment to the mission of LNS and understanding of labor and climate issues and audiences
Compensation and Benefits
This position is represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, CWA Local 32035. The salary range is $80,000-$100,000. We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance, unlimited time off, and a 35 hour work week. This is a full-time, remote position, with occasional travel required.
